Pakistan Plane Crashes, All 152 On Board Dead

A Pakistani passenger plane crashed in heavy rain near Islamabad on Wednesday, killing all 152 people on board, officials said, in the worst aviation accident in Pakistan.

The Airbus 321, belonging to a private airline crashed into a heavily wooded and hard-to-access hillside while flying from the southern port city of Karachi.

Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said 115 bodies had been recovered so far but bad weather and difficult terrain above the city had hampered search efforts.

"Unfortunately, no one survived ... Many bodies are not in good shape," Kaira told a india news conference.

Twelve bodies had been identified so far, but "the crash was very terrible. There was fire. It's difficult to recognise the bodies".

Passengers' remains were badly damaged in the crash and DNA tests would be used to identify the victims, he said.

Two Americans were among the victims, a U.S. embassy spokesman told Reuters. He had no further details.

The surface-to-surface missile, capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to targets around 2,000 km away, was tested from Wheeler's Island off the coast in Orissa.

Police Seize Shoaib Malik's Passport Over Marriage

Police on Monday seized the passport of the Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik -- soon to wed tennis player Sania Mirza - and questioned him in connection with allegations that he already has a wife, officers said.

Mirza planned to marry in April and settle in Dubai.

But in a case whose twists and turns have gripped India, a woman called Ayesha Siddiqui filed a police case against Malik claiming the two married in 2002 and has demanded a divorce.

Malik arrived in India last week and is staying at Mirza's house in Hyderabad, where police questioned him for nearly two hours. They have also alerted airports not to allow the cricketer to leave the country.

Malik, 28, has been fighting a 12-month ban by the Pakistan Cricket News Board for poor performance and indiscipline.

Tata Motors to Compensate Nano Vendors

Tata Motors has readied a compensation package for vendors of its Nano, the world's cheapest car, after they were forced to relocate their units following political agitation, India News (the Economic Times) said.

Tata Motors had abandoned the original site of the ultra low-cost Nano at Singur in West Bengal and moved to Sanand in Gujarat in October 2008 over disputes regarding payment for land.

The compensation package is estimated at 2 billion rupees ($44 million), the newspaper said on Monday, citing unnamed automotive industry circles.

It said the payment would likely cover at least 75 to 80 percent of the losses incurred by the vendors due to the relocation costs.

"We have done everything possible to help our vendors. We cannot quantify the size of the compensation package. It will vary from vendor to vendor depending on how much amount they had invested in our units," the paper quoted a Tata spokesman as saying.

Tata Motors began sales of Nano in July last year produced at a unit in Pantnagar in Uttarakhand. It is scheduled to roll out the tiny car from the Sanand factory later this year.

South Africa cricket captain Graeme Smith could miss the World Twenty20 tournament in West Indies due to a finger injury.

Smith, who was hurt on Monday during a domestic Indian league match, posted on microblogging site Twitter that he had a double fracture of his right middle finger.

He is due back in South Africa later on Wednesday when the full extent of his injury will be made known but he is expected to be out for up to six weeks.

South Africa media officer Michael Owen-Smith said they had not heard any news from India about the severity of the skipper's injury.

"Our team doctor, Mohammed Moosajee, said that injuries similar to Graeme's usually take three to six weeks to heal," Owen-Smith added.

"Graeme is bringing all the X-rays back with him and we will be able to make a full diagnosis once the X-rays have been seen."

The World Twenty20 in West Indies starts on April 30, South Africa's first game is against India on May 2.

India will be on next year's Formula One calendar, commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone told the sport's governing body on Thursday.

India's debut was cast into doubt last year when the country's sports ministry rejected a request by promoters JPSK Sports to pay $36.5 million in foreign currency to Ecclestone's British-based Formula One Administration (FOA).

The country is subject to strict exchange control regulations.

"Subject to final approval of the calendar by the world council ... Ecclestone has informed the FIA that India will host a Formula One event in 2011," the International Automobile Federation said in a statement at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

India has a Formula One team with Force India, owned by aviation and liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya, and a driver in Karun Chandhok who makes his debut for the new HRT (Hispania) team on Sunday.

The FIA said Chandhok, whose team have not tested their car, had been granted the mandatory super licence on the basis of previous test mileage and participation in the GP2 series last year.

India could also host the annual FIA prizegiving and accompanying meetings at the end of next season, instead of traditional venue Monaco.

The governing body said FIA president Jean Todt had suggested the awards ceremony should be hosted by a different country each year and Mallya had asked the world council to consider India as a potential host in 2011.

"This offer was warmly welcomed by the world council," it added. "However the FIA president confirmed the opportunity to host the event must be open to all the FIA's membership throughout the world," said the statement. Read More @ India News

"Rann" is an insider's account of how news channels greedy for ratings are being manipulated into sensationalizing stories to grab eyeballs.

"I am going to expose the media in this film and that is not necessarily a bad thing," Varma told reporters on Tuesday.

"A lot of times democracy is being controlled by forces that are not always visible to us."

"Rann" stars Amitabh Bachchan as the owner of a news channel who is forced to compromise on his principles for the sake of ratings.

A Taiwanese film about a father who battles to keep custody of his daughter won the top prize at the 40th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Friday.

"I Can't Live Without You", directed by Leon Dai, won the Golden Peacock award and a cash prize of 4 million rupees at the closing ceremony of the 11-day film festival in the tourist haven of Goa.

The jury, headed by Brazilian director Joao Batista de Andrade, praised the film for being a "poetic and realistically designed" depiction of a father-daughter relationship.

"The jury would like to emphasise the quality of every technical department in the film as well as its outstanding interpretation," Andrade said in the citation.

Georgian film "The Other Bank", about a 12-year-old boy who embarks on a dangerous mission to find his father, won the Silver Peacock prize and a cash award of 1.5 million rupees.

The Best Director trophy went to Korean filmmaker Ounie Lecomte for "A Brand New Life", a tale of a young girl who has to get used to life in an orphanage.

The pressures of being Amitabh Bachchan's son must be immense but in the ten years that Abhishek Bachchan has been a part of the Hindi film industry, he has never complained.

With his latest film "Paa", both the Bachchans bring the father-son relationship alive on screen, albeit with a twist.

The 33-year-old actor has slowly won his own place under the Bollywood sun, and spoke to Reuters about the time he thought he wouldn't make it as an actor, what director Mani Ratnam means to him, and of course "Paa".

Q: The fact that you are playing your father's father in "Paa" is unique in itself but you are also playing a young politician in the film. That's also unusual, isn't it?

A: "I was very excited when (director) Balki told me that he wanted to make my character a politician because I was very keen to show a politician in good light. Unfortunately, we typecast politicians in our films and there is a cliché of a politician who wears a Nehru cap, wears a sadri (traditional Indian garb), chews paan and is corrupt.

"I wanted to show that there are politicians who are forward thinking and can do good things. Amol Arte is not corrupt. He is a good guy and I think everyone's faith in politicians will be rebestowed (sic) after this film."

Q: This is also a movie that has quite a radical subject, doesn't it?

A: "Well, for starters, the film isn't about progeria. That is just a background. Progeria was a second thought and I don't mean that with any disrespect. Balki came up with the idea that he wanted me to play my father's father and we set about looking for a plausible reason to do that. How do you have me and my father in the same frame and make it look believable? That's when Balki came upon progeria which is a very unfortunate disease where the human body ages much faster than it is supposed to.

"People with progeria have a very distinct look, so the make-up was right there. We did take a few creative liberties. But the film is not about progeria and nor does it show the tragic life of a progeria victim. It's a happy film and you will definitely leave the theatre with a smile on your face. It's a film about a father and a son."

Q: Bollywood hasn't really moved to making films that have radical subjects. Do you think "Paa" is that film?

A: "I think our films are fantastic and I don't know why the word 'masala film' is looked down upon. I dare anyone to come and make a masala film here -- it is very tough. I think our genre of films is unique and every week we come up with something good.

"I don’t think 'Paa' is a radical film. At the heart of it, it is an emotional, sweet film. I don't look at it as radical just because our lead artiste has got a new look." Read More...

A new Bollywood film that explores the popularity of Shah Rukh Khan, has the actor's name in its title and features conversations about him is wooing audiences at the annual film festival in Goa.

Khan also has a two-minute cameo in "Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu", about a flower girl in Mumbai whose life changes after a chance meeting with the actor who tells her that she is beautiful.

"To change ugliness to beauty, that is the power of a star. I have seen Shah Rukh becoming that kind of a star over the years," director Makrand Deshpande told reporters at the 40th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in the tourist haven of Goa.

Khan, 44, is one of India’s biggest stars, having acted in Bollywood films for nearly two decades, and has a massive fan following.

"If he hadn't worked so hard to become that, this film wouldn't have been made," Deshpande said.

Deshpande, an actor himself, said he hoped to release the film in cinemas early next year and admitted that Khan's name would help promote "Shahrukh Bola Khoobsurat Hai Tu".

"Yes, my film will definitely benefit from the fact that it has Shah Rukh Khan's name in it, at least till the marketing and publicity stage. After that it will work on its own merit," said Deshpande.

Why is Rakhi Sawant’s mother in? Why does Kamaal Khan call himself KRK? Sherlyn Chopra as a bai in the house? Not just me, but a lot of bloggers and netizens were updating Twitter and Facebook with every little detail of yesterday’s launch episode.

Shows like this, as Colors CEO, Rajesh Kamat told me last week, may not be in the league of a Balika Vadhu in terms of ratings, but they get talked about much more than the regular daily soaps, which builds the buzz around the channel.

Getting Amitabh Bachchan as host, he said, was enough to create all the buzz they needed, and Bachchan proved last night that he had lost none of his KBC charm, drawing in the audience as easily as he had done four years ago.

Like I have said before, I love watching Bigg Boss, voyeuristic though it may seem, and inmates like Rahul Mahajan, Rakhi Sawant and even Carol Gracias made the show even more interesting for me.

This time around though, I didn’t see anyone that would stir things up a little bit, but I do find myself rooting for Mrs Jaya Sawant – just by virtue of the fact that she is the most unusual choice for a Bigg Boss inmate; the rest seem like the usual suspects.

Govt Sets Jan 14 Date for 3G Spectrum Auction

India will begin a long-delayed auction of third-generation (3G) radio spectrum on Jan. 14, 2010, the telecoms ministry said on Saturday.The auction, which would introduce high-speed Internet and video downloads on mobile phones, was originally slated for January 2009 but was deferred to December after differences between the telecoms and finance ministries over the reserve price for the bids.

Firms have to submit bids by Dec. 21 for a total of 71 blocks of spectrum put up for auction across 20 of India's 22 telecoms zones, according to a memorandum to prospective bidders.

The government did not give a reason for the second extension.

The base price for 3G spectrum across the country is 35 billion rupees ($750 million), and Telecoms Minister Andimuthu Raja has said the government would net at least 250 billion rupees from the sale.

As growth picks up Policy rates seen on hold

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is expected to hold key rates steady at its policy review next week as growth begins to show some signs of revival and concerns about rising prices are seen deterring further cuts, a Reuters poll shows.

Of 25 analysts polled, 22 expected no change in the key repo and the reverse-repo rates, and three said the Reserve Bank of India may cut both rates by 25 basis points at its July 28 policy review.

While the RBI's aggressive rate-cutting cycle since last October looks to be over, analysts do not expect rate hikes until the first quarter of 2010 at the earliest.

Two Hotels attacked in Jakarta

Bomb blasts ripped through the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton hotels in Jakarta's business district on Friday, killing nine people and wounding dozens in attacks that could dent investor confidence in Indonesia.

A car bomb also blew up along a toll road in North Jakarta, police said without giving further details. Indonesia's Metro TV said two people had been killed. An unexploded bomb was also later found at the Marriott, police said.

The apparently coordinated bombings are the first in several years and follow a period in which the government had made progress in tackling security threats from militant Islamic groups, bringing a sense of political stability to Southeast Asia's biggest economy.

Suspicion is likely to fall on remnants of the Jemaah Islamiah group, blamed for previous attacks including a car bombing outside the Marriott in 2003 as well as bombings on the resort island of Bali the previous year that killed 202 people.

Nilekani quits Infosys to join Govt

Nandan Nilekani, co-chairman of Infosys Technologies Ltd, India's No. 2 outsourcer, has resigned from the company's board to join the government, the company said on Thursday.

Nilekani, one of the founders of Infosys, has been invited by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to head government agency Unique Identification Authority of India in the rank of a cabinet minister, Infosys said in a statement.

Nilekani, a former chief executive of the company, was not involved in active management since becoming co-chairman in 2007.

A government statement said Murli Deora had been reappointed oil minister, and Kamal Nath, trade minister in the previous government, would become minister for road transport and highways.
