Jet pilot strike hits flight schedules

Jet Airways, India's top carrier, expects to cancel a total of 174 domestic and 32 international flights on Wednesday as services take a hit from a flash strike by pilots for the second day, Chief Operating Officer Hamid Ali told reporters.

Jet officials said it was difficult to estimate revenue losses at the moment but said bookings had come down to 14,000 passengers a day from an average of 23,000 booking. Read more..

Y.S.R. Reddy Died in a crash

According to a Latest News Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, one of India's leading political kingmakers, was killed in a helicopter crash, an official said on Thursday, potentially weakening the ruling Congress party in Andhra Pradesh.

Reddy, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, helped engineer the Congress party-led coalition's victory in a general election in May. His state is home to many IT firms and outsourcing businesses, important elements of India's growing and globalising economy.

Strike hits bank operations for second day

Trading volume in Indian currency and bond markets was hit for a second day on Friday following a two-day strike by about 900,000 employees at state-run banks, demanding higher wages and pension.

State-run banks, led by State Bank of India, the country's largest lender, control more than half the banking sector assets and dominate the fixed-income and foreign exchange markets.

"The strike is total everywhere. Most of the branches are closed," C.H. Venkatachalam, convenor of the United Forum of Bank Union, which represents all bank unions, said.

Nilekani quits Infosys to join Govt

Nandan Nilekani, co-chairman of Infosys Technologies Ltd, India's No. 2 outsourcer, has resigned from the company's board to join the government, the company said on Thursday.

Nilekani, one of the founders of Infosys, has been invited by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to head government agency Unique Identification Authority of India in the rank of a cabinet minister, Infosys said in a statement.

Nilekani, a former chief executive of the company, was not involved in active management since becoming co-chairman in 2007.

New Trade Minister Appointed

On Thursday Anand Sharma appointed as trade minister in the new Indian government, a key post with responsibility for negotiating the country's stand at the Doha round of global trade talks.

A government statement said Murli Deora had been reappointed oil minister, and Kamal Nath, trade minister in the previous government, would become minister for road transport and highways.

He was the junior foreign minister in the previous government and has his roots in youth politics, has little experience of economic portfolios and is likely to toe the line set by his reformist boss, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
